Gadgets

Gadgets have become increasingly popular in recent years, due to the globalisation and popularisation of technology, and are being seen less as a geeky hobby and more as a practical type of tool that can be used by a range of people for a variety of uses. Even how we define the word ‘gadget’ has changed in recent years, from meaning something that is useful but also a novelty item to being something that has serious practical application, and may or may not include the novelty factor.

In more recent years, the term gadget has come to represent a piece of technology that is compact and portable. Gadgets have often in the past been considered to be generally small, but not always as portable as they could have been, so this development has been particularly useful for people wishing to use gadgets. This factor has also helped to make gadgets more popular among the masses as opposed to only the educated and technologically capable community, which is why items which are arguably gadgets such as the iPhone have become so popular.

Gadgets are not always sp serious in their design and intended use, however. Many modern toys are described as gadgets, because they perform a specific purpose and they are quite small, not because they are particularly practical or useful in the sense that they perform an important duty. These include radio controlled cars, which as well they might be very fun to play with, are not very serious in their application.
